Our approach

A library, not a feed.

The Parent’s Cut helps families find movies and shows worth their evening together — the ones that suit a child’s age, carry something worth talking about, and are a pleasure to watch.

It’s also a place to pass stories down. The films you grew up with sit beside the ones your children are discovering now, each with the questions and small activities that turn a story into a conversation, and a conversation into something a family keeps.

How Each Title Is Reviewed

Each entry considers the things a parent would weigh: what the story is really about, the content a family may want to know about in advance, the learning a title can support, the conversations it opens, and the activities to try afterwards.

AI-assisted tools help organise information, connect titles with our childhood chapters and learning areas, and draft guidance in a consistent structure.

Editorial judgment guides how that material is presented and refined, with attention to clear explanations, useful questions, and practical ideas families can bring into everyday life.

Review is ongoing. As we identify corrections, revisit titles, and hear from families, we update the guidance. Our goal is to give parents a useful starting point while leaving room for their own judgment about their child.

Understanding our age guidance

Suggested viewing age
Our starting recommendation based on the title's content. Children differ in sensitivity and readiness, so check the parent heads-up notes before choosing.
Best learning window
The ages when a title's ideas and lessons are likely to be most accessible and useful.
Best discussion ages
The ages when children may be ready to explore the title's questions in more depth.
Best chapter
The childhood stage most closely aligned with the title's themes and learning opportunities.

These recommendations answer different questions. A title can suit more than one chapter, and children may engage with its lessons differently as they grow. Consider the learning and discussion guidance alongside the suggested viewing age and parent heads-up notes.

The Parent’s Cut Grade

The Parent’s Cut Grade is our editorial assessment of a title’s overall value for family viewing. It considers the viewing experience alongside the lessons, conversations, and activities a story can support.

Grades run from A+ to C. A higher grade reflects a stronger overall combination within our framework; it does not mean a title is right for every child.

The grade is separate from age and content guidance. Check the suggested viewing age and parent heads-up notes alongside it.
